J. R. D. Tata is the founder of Air India in 1932 as Tata Airlines, a division of Tata Sons Ltd. Air India operates an all wide-body fleet collected of Airbus A310, Airbus A330, Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 aircraft.

As part of the merger process, National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL) was recognized, into which both Air India (along with Air India Express) and Indian Airlines (along with Alliance Air) will be merged. After merging, the airline continued to be called as Air India. The headquarter of Air India will be continued in Mumbai. The Government of India announced that Air India would be combined with Indian Airlines in 2007.
